- This is a short note to annouce the second release of the XT hard disk
- drivers for Linux. This set of patches is for Linux 0.99 (pl0) and should
- be available on tsx-11 under /pub/linux/ALPHA/xtdisk/xtdisk2.tar.Z and
- /pub/linux/ALPHA/xtdisk/README.xtdisk.
-
- Just a brief introduction: this driver allows you to use XT-style (8 bit)
- hard drive controllers. The advantage of these is that you can use them in
- conjunction with normal AT-style (16 bit) controllers, IDE drives and SCSI
- drives. The major problem with them is the fact that they are very slow, so
- swapping to one of these controllers/disks is not reccomended <grin>.
-
- So, if you have some old MFM or RLL disks that you'd like to use, and you
- can get hold of a suitable XT controller, you can now make use of them
- under Linux. Please email me if you have any questions about this...
-
- The driver now attempts to auto-detect XT controllers and will also try to
- read the disk geometry if it knows how. At the moment, support for this is
- quite minimal, and I would appreciate it if anyone who had one of these
- cards and is using or planning on using the driver could contact me so I
- can add more support.
