-
- You need not have *any* connectivity to the nameservers, as long as you
- have some way of getting updates to them (carrier pigeon, sneakernet, etc).
- All the nameservers do is answer queries about the domain.
-
- You do need connectivity to your listed MX (Mail eXchanger) sites, because
- they're the sites that people will be sending your mail to.
-
- Example:
-
- bogart.actors.org. IN MX 50 megavax.bigu.edu.
-
- (Assume bogart and megavax are their UUCP names)
-
- megavax's sendmail might change mail for user@bogart.actors.org into
- nearsite!farther!bogart!user, and pass it off over UUCP.
-
- The only requirement for an MX is that they know how to get mail to the
- site being MXed for. Exactly how they do it is not at issue, because it's
- "outside the DNS". (Printing out the mail and delivering it via carrier
- pigeon, for example.)
-
- So to answer the question you didn't ask but probably meant to, yes, you
- can have mxsite!othersite!yoursite!user as long as othersite doesn't mind.
