Hmmm... I was about to suggest getting a faster machine :-)
I can't see why PLAY73 particularly can't keep up -- do you have large areas of changes from one frame to another?
You could download FLILIB (FLILIB11.ZIP is the latest version, I think) from Simtel's MSDOS/GRAPHICS directory. It provides C source code for FLI encoding and playback, so you could roll your own player.
