- There's this mildly annoying thing that happens occasionally; I'm
- wondering if anyone knows why, or if there's anything I can do to
- prevent it.
-
- It happens in several modes that split the window into an index and a
- text display - modes like gnus and mh-e. Usually, when you're
- displaying a long text item and page it with [space], it scrolls
- smoothly. Sometimes, though, it "hiccups": the mode line between the
- index pane and the text pane bounces up and down, and the whole text
- area blanks and redraws. Just today, I had a performance-sensitive
- thing running in background (an audio process that reads a CD and
- plays it out through the computer's speakers), and noticed that it
- hiccupped at the same time. Apparently, whatever's going on here is
- pretty expensive (I have a pretty up-scale workstation, and it wasn't
- doing anything to speak of at the time).
-
- I've thought about what might be causing it, but haven't come up with
- any good theories: I don't think it's variation in how much text can
- be reused in the text window, 'cause hardly any ever can; I don't
- think it's garbage collection, 'cause it doesn't take *that* long; I
- don't think it's paging, 'cause why would my pages be out (I've
- often been reading news or mail or whatever for quit some time before
- this happens).
-
- Anyone have any thoughts?
