  25. Abstract:
  26.    Computer Graphics and Scientific Visualization are an accepted
  27.    part and essential tool in engineering and scientific research,
  28.    but their incorporation into university education is still
  29.    very much in the formative stage.  This conference will bring
  30.    together key participants in the educational uses of scientific
  31.    visualization in a range of disciplines (engineering, computer
  32.    science, and computational sciences (chemistry, physics, biology,
  33.    mathematics)) to share their experiences, to explore common
  34.    problems and opportunities, and to identify promising directions
  35.    for future work applicable in a range of disciplines.

  37. Conference activities
  38. ---------------------
  39. Outstanding invited speakers will present papers on the educational
  40. uses of visualization in these disciplines, followed by one or more 
  41. submitted papers, with group discussions of each set of presentations.
  42. There will also be demonstrations and interactive use of materials 
  43. described in the presentations and other relevant materials.

  45. The issues to be addressed at the conference will include:

  47.        -o- Examples of current and planned educational applications of
  48.            Scientific Visualization.
  49.        -o- Uses of Scientific Visualization in furthering the
  50.            interaction and integration of university research
  51.            and instructional activities.
  52.        -o- Long term opportunities and difficulties for
  53.            widespread educational use of Scientific Visualization.
  54.        -o- Tools and methodologies for developing curricular
  55.            materials incorporating scientific visualization.
  56.        -o- Educational implications and exploitation of new 
  57.        technologies in multimedia, high-speed networking,
  58.        and computing.

  62. The conference venue is the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
  63. One of nine campuses of the University of California system,
  64. UCI is among the leading research universities in the United States.
  65. Forty miles south of Los Angeles, five miles from the Pacific
  66. Ocean and 5 minutes from Orange County Airport (with direct flights 
  67. from such major hubs as Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco), 
  68. the campus's modern facilities are located amid coastal footlands 
  69. featuring a natural arboretum planted with trees and shrubs from 
  70. all over the world.

  72. In timing and location, the working conference will be convenient for
  73. those wishing to attend SIGGRAPH'93 or the (collocated) ACM Multimedia'93
  74. Conference the following week in Anaheim, California, some 15 freeway
  75. miles from UCI.  The local arrangements committee for this IFIP WG3.2
  76. working conference will be happy to assist participants who wish to
  77. take advantage of this multiple opportunity.

  81. The program will start with a keynote address by Professor Troy Nagle,
  82. President-elect of IEEE, on July 28, 1993, at 9:30 a.m.  There will
  83. follow sessions in which invited speakers will present papers on the
  84. educational uses of visualization in these disciplines, followed by one
  85. or more submitted papers, with group discussions of each set of
  86. presentations. There will also be demonstrations and interactive use of
  87. materials. The working conference will adjourn at 3:30 p.m., Friday,
  88. July 30.

  91. Tuesday, July 27.

  95. The conference proceedings will be published by Elsevier Scientific
  96. Publishers.

  100. As is usual with IFIP working Conferences, participation is by
  101. invitation only.  The projected size of the conference is between
  102. 70 and 90 participants.  The organizers will ensure a fair
  103. representation from different disciplines and different parts of the
  104. world, with the cooperation of computer vendors in sponsoring this
  105. broadly based attendance.
  106.  
  107. In addition to invited speakers, the list of invited participants
  108. will include the following:
  109.     1) Authors of original papers (of no more than 5,000 words)
  110.        presented at the conference.  These papers will be selected on
  111.        the basis of an extended abstract (of approximately 1,000 words)
  112.        submitted by January 31, 1993.  The conference proceedings will
  113.        be published by Elsevier Scientific Publishers.
  114.     2) People with experience in the area of the working conference
  115.        who request an invitation to participate.  This request should 
  116.        include a brief (no more than 2 pages) resume with a statement 
  117.        of interests relevant to the working conference.  It should be
  118.        submitted by January 31, 1993.  The outline of such a request,
  119.        suitable for e-mail submission, is enclosed.
  120. On the basis of materials submitted by January 31, 1993, invitations for
  121. participation and for paper submission will be sent out by February 28.
  122. Final papers will be due by April 30 with authors notified of acceptance
  123. by May 31 and camera ready copy due by June 31.

  127. A registration fee of $150 will cover meals and materials distributed
  128. at the working conference.  Participants are expected to find funding
  129. for travel and living expenses.  The Organizing Committee is prepared
  130. to offer assistance in these areas.

  164. What is IFIP?
  165. -------------
  166. The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) is a
  167. multinational federation of professional and technical organizations
  168. concerned with information processing. IFIP was founded in 1960 under
  169. the auspices of UNESCO. IFIP is dedicated to improving worldwide
  170. comunication and increased understanding among practitioners of all
  171. nations about the role information processing can play in all walks of
  172. life. Members of IFIP are national organizations in the field of
  173. information processing.

  175. Technical work, which is at the heart of IFIP's activity, is managed by
  176. a series of Technical Comittees (TC). Each Technical Committee is
  177. composed of representatives of IFIP Member organizations. Technical
  178. Committee 3 is on Education.  Under each Technical Committee there
  179. operate Working Groups. These consist of specialists who are
  180. individually appointed by their peers independent of nationality.
  181. Working Group 3.2 (WG 3.2) is one such group with as its focus
  182. University Education.

  186. WG 3.2 is chartered to "provide guidance on the adequate informatics
  187. component needed in the curricula of all disciplines making significant
  188. use of informatics." This working conference is one of a series WG 3.2
  189. has organized on curricula including one at Brown University
  190. (Providence, R.I.) in April 1990 and another at Swiss Federal Institute
  191. of Technology (ETH), Zurich, in October 1991.  Proceedings of both these
  192. working conferences were published as special issues of the journal
  193. "Education & Computing" published by Elsevier Scientific Publishers.
