- Greetings,
-
- This concerns the use of 14.4K external modems (namely the Digicom) with
- PCs not containing a separate 16550 UART but, rather, with the UART function
- integrated into some other multifunction chip.
-
- I have two machines. The first is a new 486SX-25 with an AMI Super Voyager
- motherboard, where the serial ports are built into the motherboard.
- The second is a 386DX-25 with a separate multifunction card containing not
- only the serial functions but also the parallel, game, hard disk, and
- floppy disc functions. The large scale chips it uses are the Western Digital
- WD37C65CJM and a Winbond W86C453P.
-
- I've heard the general recommendation that in cases like these a separate
- serial card with a 16550 should be installed just to be sure but does anyone
- actually know of cases where setups like mine have problems? I would hope
- that especially in the AMI case the serial port could keep up. While I
- can purchase separate serial cards, a dollar is a dollar.
-
- Thanks,
- Ray Mitchell
