- Your problem is that you have not disabled the escape sequence on the
- ZyXEL. When the user enters the escape code, it also gets echoed by
- their shell, and the ZyXEL sees it and *also* drops down to command
- mode. The light-show you see is the modem and the computer getting
- into a screaming match -- the modem says "ERROR", the computer says
- "ERROR: command not found", the modem says "ERROR", and so forth...

- To fix this, change the S43 register on the ZyXEL to 128. This should
- cause the modem to ignore all escape characters (which is really
- something you want to do anyway for a dialup modem).
