- V.42bis specifies that the connection begins in uncompressed mode.
- This is because, until some strings are learned in the dictionary,
- sending in compressed mode would expand data by 12.5% (since the
- minimum compressed codeword size is 9 bits). It does NOT specify
- when the initial switch to compressed mode is to be done, or when to
- switch back and forth later in the connection; that is left entirely
- up to the manufacturer. V.42bis specifies only how the switch is
- indicated, not the criteria under which switching should be done.
