- Raymond> Isn't the Rockwell chipset a replacement for the UART 16550?
-
- No.
-
- Several of the Rockwell modem chipsets do emulate popular UARTs
- (16450, etc) as a parts (cost) reduction feature, but the main "guts"
- of the chipsets is the firmware and hardware to make a modem.
-
- Simplistically, a UART is typically a seperate chip that sits in the
- path between a CPU and a serial device (like a modem). Rockwell adds
- the functionality of the UART into the modem's microcontroller so that
- a seperate device is not needed, saving space and material costs.
