- I've been experiencing problems with my Best Data Products "Smart One" 2400
- modem (Hayes compatible) losing the carrier when I'm inactive for 10- 40
- minutes (usually 20+) on a SLIP connection. I've used a terminal emulation
- program (Telemate) to call the Slip server a number of times to look for
- dirty lines, but almost always have clean, often excellent, line. I don't
- have error correction to turn off on the modem, so that's not likely it. I
- lose connection regardless of which program I run with Slip (usually
- Popmail, Trumpet 1.05g, and Gopher). The initialization string in the
- Slipdial program's Default.slp is AT&F, which gets factory settings. I tried
- replacing this string with AT&C1 (follow actual carrier state, rather than
- ignore as is the factory setting), but made no difference. I have exchanged
- e-mail with telecom wizards locally, thinking they had some sort of timeout
- on SLIP or NNTP; no timeouts are in place.
-
- Don't know what to try now. Do Hayes compatible modems have some "feature"
- that instructs them to drop the carrier after a period of inactivity?
-
- Thanks,
