- MNP comes in different flavors.
-
- Level 1 - a one direction error correction that nobody uses
- Level 2 - a two directional asynchronous protocol
- Level 3. - a synchronous version of level 2
- Level 4 - optimized headers ontop of either Level2 or level 3
- Level 5 - compression ontop of level 4.
- Level 6 - a v.29 9600 ping-pong protocol
- Level 7 - a better compression
-
- I seem to recall that there is a special noisy channel MNP, for
- cellular phones links etc, but I have not seen a description of it.
- Now many modem makers shipped a terminal program that implimented
- MNP level 5/4/2 (async) so the could put the magic letters M-N-P-5 on
- the outside of their boxes. Now its ditto for M-N-P-7.
-
- Whether you can get one of these without buying a modem, I don't know.
- Of them the one I liked best was MTE (MNP Terminal Emulator). I think
- its called MTEZ these days. (Just guessing, they added zmodem)
- I recall seeing a 'test-drive' version of it on GEnie. You might be
- able to find that on FTP too. It was by a company called Magicsoft.
- PH: 312-953-2374. But that number is years old.
-
- Your best bet I think would be to find someone who bought a cheap
- 2400 modem that came with a MNP terminal emulator and ask them to
- transfer its licence to you. I have bought such modems for a
- multiline BBS, and the disks are just sitting in the boxes unused.
- (No, don't ask, you can't have mine. If I sell the modems used I
- need to sell the whole package)
