  15. I just read an article called "Into the FIBERSPHERE", which is serialized
  16. from a forthcoming book by George Gilder called "Telecosm".  In it he says
  17. that we should wire everybody with fiber and make the network dumb but put
  18. all the smarts in the terminals ( 1 gigabit speed from terminals to the network). 
  19. Then the network will basically function like the atmosphere but with a lot
  20. more bandwidth, 25,000 gigahertz.  I think this is referred to as the 
  21. all-optical network and wave division multiplexing is a key technology for 
  22. this concept.
  23.     ATM was not mentioned in the article, so I was wondering if anybody can
  24. shed light on the concept of the all-optical network and its relationship
  25. to ATM.
