- I just read an article called "Into the FIBERSPHERE", which is serialized
- from a forthcoming book by George Gilder called "Telecosm". In it he says
- that we should wire everybody with fiber and make the network dumb but put
- all the smarts in the terminals ( 1 gigabit speed from terminals to the network).
- Then the network will basically function like the atmosphere but with a lot
- more bandwidth, 25,000 gigahertz. I think this is referred to as the
- all-optical network and wave division multiplexing is a key technology for
- this concept.
- ATM was not mentioned in the article, so I was wondering if anybody can
- shed light on the concept of the all-optical network and its relationship
- to ATM.
