- I need to construct a database that is accessible via a PC. The data
- can be thought of as catalogue-based, i.e. products that are available to
- consumers and that one might see in a catalogue.
-
- The current PC tools I have are Borland's relational database
- software, Paradox, and Borland's Windows front end, Object Vision.
-
- I also have access to Unix machines and was considering storing the
- database under Unix and making it accessible through the internet.
-
- The questions I have are:
-
- 1) Is there any public domain database software that runs under
- Unix and supports Paradox or Object Vision file formats?
- My version of Paradox supports formats such as dBASE, Pfs, Reflex,
- ASCII, Quatro Pro, 1-2-3 Symphony, Visicalc. I guess it would
- be optimal if the software supported Paradox directly, but not
- absolutely necessary. Object Vision supports Paradox, dBASE,
- Btrieve, and ASCII.
-
- 2) What are good/cheap/easy methods for connecting a PC to
- the internet, or to a Unix host with access to the internet,
- for the purpose of extracting information from the
- database?
-
- Any input on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
