- Glad you posted this, Todd. I had missed Eric's statements.
- In answer to Eric, if we do not consider yourself a part of real
- science as a psychologists, then we are vulnerable to the doubts of
- others. All the "others" have to do is throw a little joke, innuendo,
- or even straight forward ignorance at us, and if we do not believe we
- are real scientists, we will take offence, miss the joke, and try to
- create lengthy lectures (in the tone of "... The lady doeth protest too
- much, me thinks...") about how legitimate psychology is as a science.
-
- That upon which one most focuses becomes true.
-
- Why am I so resistant to the idea that this is a real problem? Because
- it isn't a problem. It is completely useless to rant and rave about
- a problem from the pulpit or the lectern. It does not help any one
- person in the profession to promote psychology as a science. You see,
- if you focus on the problem, it is a problem that you will get in return.
-
- If you are a psychologist and you wish to be seen as a scientist, act
- like a scientist. Engage committees like a scientist would. Make
- proposals like a scientists would. And if you run into trouble, solve
- your problems like a scientist would by breaking down the underlying
- assumptions and holding things accountable to the data.
-
- Let's try it right now. I have invited on several occasions an example
- to be put to the test. Provide an example that demonstrates the
- problem. I will and can show in response how the responsibility for
- the solution of that problem is the hands of the psychologist. Try
- me. Let's be scientists and quit preaching.
