- Thank you for your wise posting. I agree wholeheartedly
- with your policy. This is a particularly ambiguous medium. In my
- own experience I had a public response to an informational posting
- that made me feel quite unappreciated. The person wrote, "We really
- need more important announcements like this" and asked a simplistic
- question. When I composed a careful note asking how
- I should read the response my private communication drew a private
- reply that the message was meant at face value--and I felt I had
- learned something important. Sometimes I post views from a humanities
- position to encourage the "metal detectors" in our field to think.
- The results are somewhat discouraging when my original message is
- fragmented with >>>>>> down the left margin and the ideas are chopped
- and distorted. It is most weird when people who I know from
- conferences and their printed writings as fairly reasonable do this.
- Basically, I ignore the insult and assume the aggravating person is
- responding to something else altogether such as being overworked,
- and underpaid. Anyway, this is to thank you for moderating.
