- You've answered your own question. The telephone number can function as an
- identifier to route the call to you, and then claim who the caller is. But
- it cannot prove it - you need extra digits known only to the callers to act
- as a proof of identity. If it were not so, anyone could work out what your
- "address space" was, and try all the numbers there.
