- Anyone know a worse football side than Torquay United? Not a great advert
- for the Football League as, on Saturday in the FA Cup against Yeovil...
-
- 1) Their only game play was based around hoofing it up to the (very large)
- striker Justin Fashanu, who was totally clueless if the ball came to
- him less than 7 or 8 feet from the ground
-
- 2) In 23 years of football watching, I have seen few players as
- donkeyesque as their No 5 (Moore?). See that great clearance (it
- was on Match of the Day) that gave the second goal to Mick Spencer.
-
- 3) They were very late on a large percentage of tackles; that Jeff Sherwood
- came away with both legs intact is something of a miracle. It struck
- me as a big shame that referees aren't stricter on persistent fouling too;
- even those players that weren't so bad as to commit directly bookable
- offences, often commited so many less serious fouls that some action
- should have been taken
-
- 4) They excessively argued EVERY refereeing decision (even the blatant
- handball that led to the 2nd penalty; TV evidence showed the decision
- to be obviously correct)
-
- 5) The ground (Plainmoor) is a dump of the first order
-
- 6) Their support was very nearly outnumbered by the away fans
-
- 7) They were completely stuffed by the Mighty Yeovil Town, who now exclusively
- hold the record for FA Cup wins against league sides as a non-league team
- (record previously joint held with Altrincham)
-
- By contrast, Yeovil played the quality footy and got a well deserved
- win. I think with the improvement of the Conference over the last few
- seasons, and the decline of the 4th (now 3rd) division, more than one
- promotion/relegation per season is a must, but let's hope that Torquay
- don't get relegated to join us in the Conference :-)
-
- I'm writing this before the second round draw. If anyone out there has
- the ability to fix it, I'd like Reading at home, please. At least they try
- to play *football* (and I live in Reading now so would like to be able to
- gloat about having them as the next league scalp!)
