- Since your story is all about "would have"s, let's add another one in there.
- Since research is never just the work of one person, there *would have* been
- another person with the expertise necessary to develop what "Chelsea Smith"
- *would have* developed.

- attack virii *would have* been delayed 10 years because of Chelsea Smith who
- never quite learned how to sterilize lab equipment properly.
