- I *strongly* recommend the television show "I'll Fly Away,"
- especially to youngsters and Yankees. It's set around 1960
- in North Carolina and deals with the civil rights movement
- in considerable detail and subtlety. A number of the
- issues raised around how the movement was conducted translate
- very well to the contemporary GLB rights movement.
-
- I wholeheartedly agree. (We tape everything we watch, so I'm months
- behind the storyline, but it's possibly the best show on TV, and is
- really exploring what it means for a small town to go through
- wrenching changes as racial/equality issues are dealt with...)
-
- Along these lines, I've become interested in reading The Autobiography
- of Malcom X. I don't know how much similarity there is between his
- struggle and that for GLB rights (I certainly don't expect to ever be
- subjected to the level of hate that he was; but maybe I'm overly
- optimistic...) But the concept of self-sufficiency as part of the
- movement for equality is appealing.
-
- So many people in the GLB community echo the statements of some blacks
- (and women) of the past: "Why shake things up when I can just go on
- living my life and everything will be fine?" But when you're hiding
- half your life from everyone around you, you are also hiding it from
- yourself, no matter how much you think you can just "separate" the
- work life from the social life.
