  33. The UM "Reconciling Congregations" and Presbyterian "More Light Churches"
  34. are not organizations of (mostly) gay/lesbian individuals, but organizations
  35. of entire congregations who support the principle of equality regardless
  36. of sexual orientation. Like the rest of the church they consist of a majority
  37. of heterosexuals -- though we attract more out les/bi/gay members.

  39. There are about 60 United Methodist Reconciling Congregations in the USA.

  41. (I participate in one, though I don't call myself a Christian.)

  43. There are similar movements in 3 or 4 other denominations -- we
  44. are trying to work cooperatively -- "Open Hands" which was the journal
  45. of the Reconciling Congregations is going to start carrying stuff
  46. from the other denominations.

  48. In addition, MFSA the Methodist Federation for Social Action, a liberal/
  49. progressive caucus in the United Methodist Church was quite active
  50. for homosexual rights at the last general conference.  We may not have
  51. majority support, but we have many friends and allies.

  53. Dignity, Integerity, and Affirmation (United Methodist) are "traditional"
  54. gay/lesbian caucuses. (I don't know about the Mormon's)  These exist in
  55. nearly every denomination, and vary in the degree to which they stress
  56. political change in the church vs. support.

  58. I don't claim that everyone has or should have the stomach to work within
  59. the church, but there are good people and communties of support -- working
  60. to provide safe space and change the unjust institutions.
