  22. Absolutely not, and I really hate the professionalization
  23. of arts programs in general (I don't agree with Arne's
  24. assertion that these programs are necessarily professional,
  25. having been through a rather thorough arts education,
  26. myself).

  28. The issue is somewhat deeper, too, than I think what has
  29. been discussed here has reflected.  CMU's decision, even if
  30. not overtly discriminatory, buys into and perpetuates a
  31. fairly perverse notion of what an ordinary or generic
  32. person is.  Black actors only get roles that are written
  33. explicitly as black characters, just as fat actors only get
  34. fat roles, etc.  Imagine my surprise (TV junkie that I am)
  35. to see Harvey Fierstein on "Murder She Wrote" this past
  36. Sunday, in a role where sexual orientation was completely
  37. irrelevant (although his character apparently had some
  38. large number of ex-wives).  He was just as much a sissy as
  39. ever.  This, I think, is the direction that the popular
  40. arts should be taking, and it seems to me that it won't
  41. happen as long as schools like CMU try to perpetuate a
  42. mythic image of the generic human.
