  23. The irony is that the clitoris is a wonderful example of a subtle
  24. evolutionary principle. As Stephen Jay Gould notes (in "Male
  25. Nipples and Clitoral Ripples", _Bully_for_Brontosaurus_), the
  26. clitoris is an evolutionary accident; it is a non-functional
  27. counterpart of a functional male organ, the penis. It is very
  28. much like male nipples in this respect; again, nipples are
  29. functional on women, and men have them because of evolutionary
  30. inertia.

  32. It turns out that both of these organs are Good Things to have,
  33. since they're fun to play with... but this was not a factor in
  34. their evolution. Females of other specieas can have orgasms from
  35. clitoral stimulation, yet their natural sexual positions almost
  36. never produce this. (Must have been fun for the scientists to
  37. determine this...) In this sense, female orgasm is also an
  38. evolutionary accident, though a fortuitous one. I hasten to say
  39. that evolution is not a moral arbiter. There is reason to believe
  40. that language is also an evolutionary accident, but I'm glad we
  41. have it.

  43. Of course, since fundamentalists are often down on evolution,
  44. this may not be enough to get the clit back into the classroom.
