  27. Sounds almost like nostalgia for the water cannon, dogs,
  28. billy clubs, bayonets, and gas masks.  I certainly don't
  29. share it.  Those things are disgusting.  People died and
  30. were maimed.  There was terror everywhere.

  35. people are situated to be able and motivated to do much
  36. more, thank goodness.

  43. That suggests a curiously anti-intellectual attitude.  It's
  44. simply not true that professional historians all write for
  45. other historians.  I'm unsure what you mean by "get to touch
  46. the popular media."  Historians are palpably less well known
  47. than Madonna, if that's your point.  You've given the media
  48. a raw deal here, too.
