  49. service.

  101.  The figures above are base on grade and time in service, i.e. an E-1
  102.  makes $786. If he doesn't get promoted, he doesn't make any more  
  103. money....ever!
  104.  An E-2 with more than 3 years service makes $965.  There are no E-8's
  105.  with  less than 8 years service or E-9's with less than 10 years
  106.  service so there's  no pay figure.  In addition to "Basis Pay",
  107.  A serviceman receives a quarters allowance but only if he lives
  108.  "Off-Base".  There is also an allowance for separate rations which a  
  109. serviceman gets if he is allowed to "Mess separately", i.e. not eat
  110.  in the mess hall. That's $192 a month.
  111.   I only gave you the first 10 years of the chart, it goes up to 26
  112.   years.
  113.   I retired from the Air Force in July '91 after 30 years service.
  114.   I'm not   sure of the other services but in the Air Force, It takes
  115.  about 8 months to a year for an E-1 to make E-2, about another 18
  116.  months to make E-3 and another year or so to make E-4. These are
  117.  average.  Almost all make E-4 but there are some that don't.  Almost
  118.  no one makes E-5 with less than 4 years service (remember this is Air
  119.  Force, I know Army makes rank quicker). The initial enlistment in
  120.  the Air Force is 4 years, so an individual just about has to re-enlist
  121.  in order to make E-5.  E-4 and below are just about automatic, E-5
  122.  is harder to make and the ranks get progressively harder as you go up.
  123.   Some folks go all the way to 20 years and never get promoted beyond E-6.
  124.   The average time in service would be: E-6/ 7-8 years; E-7/ 10-14 years;
  125.   E-8/ 18-22 years; E-9/ 20-26 years.  By law only 2% of the total
  126. enlisted     population can be in grade E-8.  Only 1% can be in grade E-9.
