- The *original* jeep was designed and produced by the Bantam Car company.
- Willys (and some others) took to making them during the war because Bantam
- couldn't produce enough to meet military need.

- did design the original Jeep as part of the design competition, as did
- Willys and Ford. Bantam's design met the design specs for weight, etc, but
- was not mechanically reliable. Willys design was much heaver, but was more
- reliable and a better contractor. The War Department choose the Willys
- design over Bantam's and Ford's, and then convinced Ford to manufacture
- according to Willys design
