  21. immediately recognized by the Allies.  Eisenhower flies to Algiers to meet
  22. Darlan.

  24. Axis forces begin taking up positions on the Mareth Line in Tunisia.
  25. Sometimes referred to as the "African Maginot," the defensive positions
  26. were built to protect the eastern border of French North Africa.
