- I'm on shakier ground with my memory, but the Wabash Seismic zone underlies
- the western half of the Ohio River Valley and is responsible for the low level of
- seismic activity in southern Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois and northern Kentucky.
- Like the New Madrid seismic zone, the Wabash zone is coincident with and
- probably caused by failed pre-Cambrian (?) rifts. The courses of the Mississippi
- and Ohio Rivers are probably controlled by the basins formed by the rift zones.
-
- To be honest, I do not remember whether the name Wabash refers to the rift zone,
- the seismic zone, or both. I'll try to remember to look up some references at home.
