  21. I have heard nothing about them.  However, I was wondering if
  22. they are using active noise cancelling technology (?).  Some years
  23. ago I saw a report (from England, I believe) about a noise
  24. cancelling system used industrially on a gas turbine generator
  25. exhaust stack.  A ring of drivers mounted around the stack were
  26. driven with the phase-reversed noise signal and achieved a significant
  27. reduction in the net noise strength.  They took an impressive amount
  28. of wattage to run, but the power consumed was a small fraction of
  29. the generator output.

  31. A similar approach could be used in the vicinity of any noisy
  32. machinery.  The acoustics would probably get difficult in diverse factory
  33. environments, however.

  35. Active noise reduction (ANR) is in use in a number of aviation
  36. headsets.  The first commercial product was offered by Bose a
  37. few years ago and there are now at least three other makers
  38. offering them.  The passive attenuation properties of the headsets
  39. reduce the higher frequency noise significantly (21dB is typical).
  40. The ANR is used to reduce the mid to lower frequency noise.  Their
  41. effectiveness is highly praised by pilots (who can afford them...).
