- First let me preface this by saying that I know very little about
- TV's and video. I'm just someone asking a question about what I
- saw....
-
-
- I'm curious as to why IDTV's don't seem to be very popular at the
- moment. A couple of years ago, several manufacturers were selling
- them and then suddenly they dropped them from their product lines. I've
- heard explanations ranging from manufacturing problems to their inability to
- display fast motion without jerkiness. Other explanations suggested that
- their picture quality was 'hard' or unrealistic.
-
- I do know that there are a few IDTV's on the market today. In fact
- I saw one this afternoon - a Toshiba CZ3299Z ($1300). I only got to
- look at it for about 10 minutes, but I came away very impressed with it.
- For comparison, it was set up next to one of the brand new Sony
- 32XBR35's ($1798).
-
- I immediately noticed the IDTV's photographic-like quality; there
- were no visible scan lines and the colors were *extremely* solid.
- Compared to the IDTV, the Sony XBR looked very grainy - the scan
- lines were very noticeable in comparison. I was pretty amazed
- at how much more vivid and 'film-like' the IDTV was. I must say
- that my first 10 minute impression of the IDTV was that it was a
- *much* better picture than any of the other TV's on display.
- I was watching a broadcast football game and the colors of the
- jerseys and helmets were so much better (more dense - much less grainy).
- When the superimposed graphics of the score and network logo were
- put up on the screen, the IDTV made them look unbelievably vivid - the
- XBR really paled in comparison.
-
- My question is: What is wrong with IDTV ???
-
- From what I could see, IDTV has the potential of making standard
- TV's obsolete. The difference in image quality appeared to be that
- much better to me. But many dealers continue to put down IDTV.
- I didn't notice any 'jerkiness' in the football game I was watching.
- (But I did notice that I could read the football field numbers
- on the IDTV whereas they were just smudges on the Sony). The IDTV didn't
- appear to be hard or unrealistic at all. I guess I just can't see why the
- IDTV isn't a far superior TV to any non-IDTV set. Can anyone shed
- some light on this for me? Since I only saw the set for about 10 minutes,
- I must of missed some glaring fault...???
-
- Thanks in advance!
