  11. I hate to do this, as I'm sure it's been done many times before.
  12. (So PLEASE E-MAIL your responses, and I'll post a summary if 
  13. there is interest!)

  15. My eleven-year-old RCA SelectaVision recently died an apparently
  16. permanent death (unlike its previous deaths).  This is both good
  17. and bad.  Bad because it had a _great_ picture compared with
  18. most modest-priced VCR's which I've seen in recent history.
  19. (Then again, it wasn't "modest-priced" itself back in 1981.)
  20. Good because now I have an excuse to buy a hi-fi stereo model
  21. which weighs less than forty pounds and which doesn't make horrible
  22. solenoid noises whenever I press a button.

  24. So, please send me your recommendations (and by this I mean something
  25. more than "buy brand X, it's great!" -- tell me what you like about
  26. your model, how's the picture and sound, any problems with it,
  27. would you buy it again, what don't you like about it, etc.) for hi-fi 
  28. stereo VCR's with a top price of $500.  Remote would be nice.  
  29. Do I want S-VHS?  (I'm kind of doubting it, myself -- my main
  30. application would be watching prerecorded films, _not_ recording
  31. from the airwaves.) I _definitely_ want input audio record level 
  32. controls, because I would like to be able to use it for audio
  33. recordings as well.  I know this is going to narrow down my choices 
  34. considerably in this price range (anybody know why this has to be 
  35. true?)

  37. Within the price range indicated, performance (i.e. picture
  38. and sound quality, proper behavior of special effects, etc.)
  39. is most important, followed very closely by reliability
  40. (I doubt that I can trust Sony in this price range, but this
  41. might just be a personal bias), and then features.
