- I would get the South American Handbook, as I have found it superior
- to the Lonely Planet Books for South America. I would suggest two
- possibilities. (1) Go to Brazil and learn some Portuguese! February
- will be one long party virtually anywhere you go in the country except
- Sao Paulo. The whole north is relatively undeveloped, has great
- beaches, and has authentic carnival celebrations. If you're so
- inclined, head to Rio for the pageantry of its celebrations during the
- actual week of Carnival. I did this in 1982 on a tiny budget and had
- a fantastic time. There is much to see to occupy the time after
- Carnival, especially Iguassu Falls, the colonial Cities and mountains
- of Minas Gerais, and the Amazon. (2) Go to Ecuador. See the
- mountains and the jungle, then head out to the Galapagos for a week or
- more. It will be unforgettable. Again, I did this on a fairly tight
- budget in 1980, but it will be relatively expensive to go the Islands.
- However, I think you will consider it money well-spent if you can
- somehow get it together.
-
- I've also been to Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia. I loved Peru, but
- think it is still not a good time to go there. Also, late winter and
- early spring is the rainy season in the Andes. Ecuador will not be as
- affected as Peru or Bolivia.
