- SYNOPSIS: The wk trof of lo press wil pass ovr CO this morn w/
- limited moisture & litl wind. There wil be a brief period of
- drier air behind it tdy befor the next strm systm moves in frm
- the Pacific NW. This one wil be stngr & wetter, and wil affect
- all of the CO mtns Fri thru Sat.
-
- FORECAST: For tdy: ptly to mstly cldy w/ widely scat swr's in
- the N&C Mtns, no precip expected in the S Mtns. Winds SW- W'ly
- 0-10 mph. Temp hi's, 20-30 in the N Mtns, & 23-33 in the C&S
- Mtns. For tnite: mstly cldy all mtns w/ scatt swr's, T-2" in
- the N Mtns, 0-2" in the C&S Mtns. Ovrnite lo's, in the teens.
- On Fri: incr'ing cld thkns & sno for all mtns; temp hi's, 18-28
- in the N Mtns, 20-30 deg in the C&S Mtns. Winds, lt & variable
- as the trof passes ovr CO dur the day, turning to 5-15 g 20 @
- rdgtps latr in the aftn. The strm wil bring sno to all mtns thru
- Sat. Snofall amts at this time luk to be in the 4-8" range in
- the N Mtns; 6-12" in the C&S Mtns, w/ locally hier amts poss in
- the San Juan's. Luk for some drying late Sat aftn & eve in all
- mtns. Fortunately winds wil not be stng, & relatively warm temps
- wil help the sno settle quickly.
-
- SNOWPACK: New snow amts rptd to the Center this morn are in the
- 1-3" range across the mtns, not enuf to incr the haz rating yet.
- No avals have been rptd since the 13th, and the backcountry aval
- haz for all mtns is rated LOW ovrall, both above & below TL.
- However, the danger wil incr Fri. Recent surface hoar and
- suncrust development on the old sno will provide a poor bonding
- surface for new snow to stick to. In addtn, temp patterns within
- the snopk have caused it to weaken internally. With this in
- mind, stay alert to an increasing hazard in the next 48 hrs. If
- you're planning backcntry excursions into steep terrain nr & abv
- TL, review safe routefinding techniques and make sure your aval
- rescue gear is in good working order. Now is a good time to
- sharpen your skills with your aval rescue beacon for the winter.
