  11. There was never any direct rail service from Grand Central Terminal to 
  12. Penn. Station.  There was a "meet here" for a BUS shuttle from
  13. Grand Central to Penn. Station for thru passengers.

  15. Grand Central is on 42nd Street and Park Ave (right in the middle), and
  16. Penn. Station is on 33rd between 7th and 8th.  It is NOT a short walk
  17. for someone in a hurry to catch a connection, or if you have a non-trivial
  18. amount of things to carry. (Note: every 20 blocks ~= 1 mile, with 
  19. blocks in the avenue direction generally MUCH longer than a standard block,
  20. thus the walking distance between these stations is on the order of
  21. a mile).

  23. There is non-direct Subway service between the stations. You can take
  24. either the 42nd Street Shuttle (S train) or the 7 train to 42nd and
  25. Times Square, then change for any of the 1,2,3, or 9 (here really the same 
  26. as the 1) to 34th and Penn. Station (really 7th avenune).  This trip 
  27. generally takes, during the day, about 10 to 15 minutes.)

  30. As far as I can tell, the Penn. tracks (going east) 
  31. and the Central tracks do not
  32. meet until Westchester.  I pretty sure this is true because I know the
  33. Metro-North System very well, and the split for the New Haven line is
  34. basically on the Bronx-Westchester boarder, right below Mount Vernon.

  36. There is another connection now, which is the so called "Empire Connection"
  37. (which is what this dicussion is all about).  Here the West Side link
  38. connects to the Hudson Line at Spyten-Dyvill(sp?).  Using this path
  39. would require that trains backup in one direction (not a problem for the
  40. RTLs and RTGs).
