- According to the latest Amtrak comprehensive schedule, early
- next year.
-
- It is a Swedish ABB X-2000 trainset that was imported not too
- long ago for testing. It can go up to 125 or 150 mph (I don't quite
- recall), and it has some features that help it go around curves at
- higher speeds than usual. The axles can swivel in the bogies, so they
- can stay perpendicular to the rails, and the cars tilt, to keep
- sideways acceleration down.
-
- It is electric, which means that the X-2000 will be confined
- to the NEC in the near future, and even then to the parts south of New
- Haven until electrification out to Boston is complete. ABB, however,
- is working on a diesel loco, which can be used on the abundant
- American trackage without overhead electric cables and with an
- abundance of twisty track, such as here in California.
