- Professional instruments range from $100 to several $1000s of dollars.
- A nice cheapy that will work well enough for your purposes is in the
- $10-$25 range from Rat Shack.

- Building a VSWR meter that will give accurate results is not a job
- for a neophyte. If you wish to try your hand, there is a design
- in the ARRL Handbook using the micromatch printed transmission line
- circuit that is fairly foolproof.

- Sure. The *best* way is to tune for maximum field strength while totally
- ignoring the VSWR. You don't care about standing waves anyway. The only
- waves you care about are the ones going out to other radios. Your radio
- *may* care about VSWR, but almost all units nowadays will reduce output
- automatically when the VSWR is out of range. That'll show up as reduced
- field strength, so you don't need to measure VSWR.
-
- Most cheapy VSWR bridges will also double as field strength meters so
- you can still buy one of those. However, a NE2 and a small wire loop
- will work as a field strength indicator. Simply tune for maximum
- brilliance of the bulb with the bulb as far from the antenna as it
- will still glow.
