- I recently was faced with the same dilemma. I was considering the 24mm f2.8
- and the 20mm f2.8. I borrowed both from friends and asked all sorts of people
- that either have or had one or both of them. Most of the people that I talked
- to felt that 24mm was not enough. They wanted a wider angle. I came to
- the same conclusion and bought the 20mm. I was a little amazed at how much
- more you really get. It is about an extra 10 degrees, but it turns out to
- include a lot more in that range of wide angle lenses.
-
- Other factors that helped sway me:
-
- * The filter size that the 20mm requires is 62mm. The 24mm takes 52mm filters.
- With one exception, all of my lenses take 62mm filters. I felt that the money
- I saved on filters would more than make up of the difference in price.
-
- * I knew several people that had purchased the 24mm first, and later switched
- to the 20mm (because of the angle of view issue). I only found one person that
- had gone the opposite direction.
-
- * I went for months looking through magazines noticing what focal lengths were
- used in shots I liked in which a wide angle lens was used. Most of the time,
- they were done with 20mm lenses. I did not observe much 24mm usage. A secondary
- aspect of this is that I wonder if resale of a 20mm might be easier than for a
- 24mm.
-
- Since I purchased the lens, I have had a chance to run a couple of rolls though
- my camera, while using that lens. I think I am going to be using it FAR more
- than I estimated I would.
