  18.  i recnetly went through this with my coonhound, who couldn't tolerate hills
  19. k/d due to allergies.  i went through a lot of experimenting with constant 
  20. discussions with my vet.  my answer was a local brand that makes dog food only,
  21. which won't help you.

  23. but this will.  old animals with weak kidneys need a food low in highly
  24. digestible protein, with fat and certain minerals also reduced.  the problem is
  25. that the kidneys can no longer deal with protein as well as they used to, so
  26. the low protein reduces the strain on the kidneys, which helps them(and the cats
  27. they are part of) to last longer with less discomfort.

  29. most senior foods. and some lite foods, meet these criteria, not quite as
  30. well as k/d, but better than anything else.  i only know of two senior cat
  31. foods(i don't know hwy hills doesn't have one):  purina mature and friskies 
  32. senior. there may be others.  start checking labels, comparing the senior food,
  33. k/d, and regular adult foods for especially protein, but also fat, phosphorus,
  34. calcium, sodium, and magnesium.

  36. a cat on a lowprotein diet may lose weight and look awful.  this is still
  37. likely to be better than pumping up its wieght with foods its kidneys can't
  38. handle.

  40. check with your vet on this and check with hills too, they have recipes
  41.  available for homemade presciption diets.
