- Curt Allread (callread@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu) has made inquiry into
- three areas: creating a name, the use of heraldic arms, and the Christ-
- ian or religious element in the SCA.
-
- 1. Both name and arms will require documentation. That means you must
- be able to show that your proposed name COULD have been in use dur-
- ing the period which the SCA covers. This isn't as difficult as it
- sounds; some research into the history of names at your university
- library will work. If you know people who are into genealogy, they
- may help as well, especially when it comes to documenting the evol-
- ution of your last name.
- This assumes, however, that you intend to submit your name as part
- of the registry in the College of Heralds in your local kingdom.
- (This essentially saves us the confusion of having two or more peo-
- ple running around with the same name.) If you are unsure of your
- SCA participation, you may want to consider holding off on the name
- registration/creation until you know for sure that you want to stay
- in.
-
- 2. Arms documentation is a little easier--someone in your local group
- who's a herald will help you out on that one.
- There MIGHT be a problem with using your mundane family's heraldry.
- however. It depends on when that heraldry was registered; if it's
- after 1650, there may be problems. Essentially you are confined to
- using elements that existed in the Middle Ages; elements that came
- afterwards are frowned upon.
- There is also the fact that herald generally want to avoid conflict
- with other registered arms, both SCA and mundane. I haven't heard
- of situations where a SCAdian asked to use the arms of his mundane
- name, and the arms in question were period. Someone else will be
- able to post on that.
-
- 3. Granted, the Christian (especially Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican
- denominations) influence was pervasive in medieval culture; however,
- the SCA does not endorse any religious viewpoint. In events lasting
- over 24 hours, any religious ceremonies held (Christian, Moslem,
- pagan, etc.) are held privately.
- This has of course led to problems, especially conflicts among SCA-
- dians with strong religious viewpoints. Your best bet would be to
- regard religion as a cultural influence ONLY, and act accordingly.
