- Greetings from Jessa d'Avondale!
-
- Justin mentions a couple of SCA dance manuals: the Rose & Nefr, and the two
- put out by Fidelico. While I own these, and have found them useful, I'd
- like to add a caveat: when reading the instructions for the English Country
- Dances, it is a good idea to have a copy of Playford by your side. In some
- of the dances where Playford is less than crystal-clear in his directions,
- the authors of the manuals have interpreted his remarks in a way that I
- don't always agree with. (Glory of the West in R&N, and Grimstock in
- Fidelico's, to name two. This is one reason I like working from the
- Country Dance and Song Society's "Playford Ball"; it has a facsimile of the
- original instructions with every dance.)
-
- I'm not saying that their versions are any less valid, but I like to know
- when I'm dealing with a straightforward repetition, or a interpretation of
- Playford's instructions. These are the dances that you will most likely
- encounter "regional" variations of when you travel, and at least you won't
- be surprised when the dancers don't do the figures the same way you do.
