- Yes, you still have to down to Whittier to get the ferry. I've been up there
- before, but (alas) it was via airplane and cage... The cool thing about the
- train is watching the busses and semis ramping up onto the flatcars for the
- trip from Whittier to Portage!

- Yeah, and the "continuous maintenance" can kill you! I beat the mortal sh*t
- out of a rental car on some of the roads under reconstruction. The best one
- I remember was the part of the road from Anchorage to Homer where if you didn't
- get through between certain hours you had to wait 12 HOURS before the road
- opened up again. And there were no McDonalds waiting there to take your
- order, either :-)

- The road reconstruction was 10-15 miles of mud, ruts, 2-3 foot drop offs in
- the middle of the "road" (=8^O) and dodging contruction vehicles -- not for
- the faint of heart.
