  21. Yes, you still have to down to Whittier to get the ferry. I've been up there
  22. before, but (alas) it was via airplane and cage... The cool thing about the
  23. train is watching the busses and semis ramping up onto the flatcars for the
  24. trip from Whittier to Portage!

  30. Yeah, and the "continuous maintenance" can kill you! I beat the mortal sh*t
  31. out of a rental car on some of the roads under reconstruction. The best one
  32. I remember was the part of the road from Anchorage to Homer where if you didn't 
  33. get through between certain hours you had to wait 12 HOURS before the road 
  34. opened up again. And there were no McDonalds waiting there to take your 
  35. order, either :-)

  37. The road reconstruction was 10-15 miles of mud, ruts, 2-3 foot drop offs in 
  38. the middle of the "road" (=8^O) and dodging contruction vehicles -- not for 
  39. the faint of heart.
