- From letters to editor column, New York Times, November 19th, reprinted without

-
- To the Editors:
- Richard Brookhiser makes a valid point about not judging people by
- their wardrobes in his Oct. 31 Op-Ed article on what happened to him
- when a fellow Manhattanite slapped a sticker for the Republican ticket
- on his motorcycle jacket, "Bikers for Bush-Quayle. No Kidding."
-
- There is a perception that bikers are rowdy, rebellious, irreverant
- and nonvoting. Today's motorcyclists are far beyond that. Nearly
- 100,000 riders completed courses of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation
- last year. Groups all across the country ride on charity runs for such
- causes as mutiple sclerosis, childhood brain tumors, mental retardation
- group homes, Toys for Tots and women's health issues.
-
- The legislative arm o fhte American Motorcyclist Association
- successfully repealed a ban against motorcyclists using state park
- roads in Brockton, Mass., and is gaining ground in other suits against
- unlawful discrimination against motorcyclists.
-
- Association range from the American Woman's Road Rider Association and
- The Christian Motorcycle Assocation to the Blue Knights International
- Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club and the Retreads (for riders older than
- 40). As for being nonvoteing, well, motorcyclists in California booted
- out Dick Flood, the legislator who used fictitious statistics (which
- he proudly admitted) to gain passage of the California helmet law.
-
- I started riding about two years ago; 23,000 miles later, let me tell
- you about the breadth of motorcyclists I have met from here to
- Colorado: we are individualists, but also a sociable lot. You can be
- big, small, black, white, gay, straight, Martian, blue-eyed,
- green-eyed, long-haired, short-haired, abled, disabled, cat loving,
- dog loving or what not. If you're on a motorcycle, you're welcome
- anywhere.

-
- Seems pretty positive (except for the Martian comment) for a
- socialist, safety-nazi dooms-day-proclaiming rag like the New York
- Times.
