- Actually you might hear more with the helmet on. Wind noise over
- an unprotected ear gets pretty loud at speed. I suppose it depends
- on the shape of the external part (pinna) of your ear- soneone whose
- ears were shaped for low wind-noise would probably do better hearing-wise
- to leave off the helmet, whereas someone with large sails like Perot
- would hear nothing but the wind whistling through his ears (head?).
-
- I can hear cars ok at speed with a helmet on, and I have a noisy helmet.

- Helmets are a trade-off. If you understand their drawbacks and
- keep them in mind, you can can enjoy the safety and comfort from
- their advantages.
-
- Drawbacks:
- hear less at low speed
- reduced perhipheral vision
- weight & heat
- possible neck damage in some accidents
-
- Advantages:
- hear more at high speed, less hearing damage too
- face & eyes protected from flying insects/rocks/etc.
- warmer in cold weather
- and finally, can save your head and your life if you fall.
