- Ah, a trip to Alaska, yes we should all go, oh don't start that again...
-
- Having made a very similar trip to the one you describe though starting
- in California I feel qualified to respond - not that that ever matters
- round here!
-
- I rode the trusty Battlestar 9600 miles in 6 weeks up to Alaska along
- with two other riders on BMWs (R80ST and R100RS). If I were going
- again I would take my KLR650 which can be equipped with some nice
- hard luggage made from camera cases and a tail pack. This is the
- perfect bike for the mixture of road surfaces you will encounter,
- everything from super slab (I suppose) to mud and wet clay. Don't
- believe what you read about the Alaska highway being paved all the
- way, perhaps it is officialy, but in fact long stretches are always
- under construction which they do not approach half heartedly. In
- addition bridges are always being washed out and long rough detours
- needed. I also highly recommend a round trip up the Dempster
- highway to Inuvik, some of the most unspoilt scenery you can find.
-
- You are correct that the CBR is not the right bike though I have ridden
- my 87 on some fairly rough roads but not wet.
-
- For those who are not familiar with the trusty Battlestar it was
- an 84 GL1200, see the cerritos archives for pre and post
- motobatics pictures. It may even still be running though it
- wasn't too healthy at the ride'n feed in July.
