- |Since we're on the subject of gas tanks and gasoline - there seems to be
- |two schools of thought on putting up your bike for the Winter where:
- |
- |1) You drain, ventilate and store the tank - drawback: chances of rust
- | forming from condensation.
-
- Put some oil in the tank and swirl it around. That'll keep it from
- rusting. Then store it inside off the bike, where constant temperature
- should further prevent condensation. Drawback: it takes quite a
- while to get a tank empty of gas, especially when the petcock is not quite
- at the bottom.
-
- |2) Fill the tank and add a stabilizer - drawback: still a posibility that
- | leaking gasoline can gum up carbs. and maybe even the crankcase. Also
- | a fire hazard unless stored properly.
-
- Remove the gas lines, put plugged lines in their place on the tank. Stabilizer
- should stop gumming even if you don't do this, but a leaky petcock and float
- valve could easily be bad news anyway. Much better to just remove the lines.
-
- The fire hazard should be no more than the bike just sitting in the garage, as
- long as you aren't storing it in the living room. In that case, I would drain
- the tank.
-
- |Is there any really defined right or wrong here or is it personal
- |preference?
-
- If the bike runs right in the spring, the method you used was right. If it
- doesn't, it was wrong. Of course, that's MY preference.
