- A lot has been written about why we ride and the risks involved. I'd
- like to propose that the incremental risk associated with motorcycling
- is greatly overshadowed by the daily risk of living.
-
- By anyone's standards, I've spent more than my fair share of time in a
- hospital bed, at one point very close to death. Except for one accident,
- all of my time in hospitals has been due to circumstances beyond my
- control. The time I've spent with my life dependent on clear plastic
- tubes, needles, gurgling pumps, and other contrivances of "modern"
- medicine has indelibly changed who I am. It's heightened my thirst to
- experience the best things in life; among which I've found motorcycling to
- be the most enduring.
-
- Of all my scars, I can only claim credit for one of them; a separated
- shoulder from a tank slapper on an SL350. That scar on my shoulder I can
- wear proudly; a badge attesting to a youth filled with excitement,
- challenge, and sometimes, peril.
-
- With increased responsibilities in life, it is tempting to put aside the
- toys of our youth on the pretense that not doing so would be
- irresponsible. Bull. For me, to resign oneself to a domesticated life of
- mediocrity is a slow, but certain death. To quote Mike: Go Fast, Take
- Chances. There are so many uncertainties in life, that to eliminate a
- truly exciting and fulfilling sport like motorcycling on the basis of risk
- is foolish.
-
- Now go out and ride.

- We don't stop riding because we get old, we get old because we stop riding.
