- ummmmm. EMD had been shipping the passenger E's in sufficient quantity,
- I think, to class that as the first main unit. In any case, _switchers_
- now forgotten, or replaced by downrated road units, were the first
- numerically significant. Diesel has more advantages over steam
- as switching power than as road power.

- I would add the FL9, the diesel/third rail units built for NYNH&H
- (and STILL running...) More were built of these than the BL1's. They
- operated (operate...) thru trains to Grand Central Terminal, by running
- off third rail.
