- } hi again...i have some more questions...
- }
- } 1) does anyone use dynamic tension as part of their training ? if so
- } is it useful to you and what is a good way to get startes on it?
- } should i even try dynamic tension?
- }
- } 2) also...i have these 2 friends that study two completely different
- } styles. one studies aikido with me and another studies san soo kung
- } foo (sp?). my problem is that they argue constantly about their
- } respective styles..each commenting on the other's style as either
- } somewhat ineffective or lacking in good technique. also they both
- } have the same opinions of other arts namely they see their own art
- } as the best. i am not putting down either style (i study aikido
- } in additions to other arts) but it has gotten to the point where
- } they cannot talk to each other about martial arts without quarrelling.
- } Also, it is impossible for them NOT to talk about their respective
- } arts since their martial arts training gives their entire life
- } meaning. HELP!
- }
- } also: my aikido friend considers san soo to be brutal and lacking in
- } philosophical guidelines whereas my san soo friends considers all
- } other martial arts, esp. aikido to be surrounded by useless
- } traditional bullsh*t that would be useless in a fight therefore not
- } worth learning. my aikido friend has watched several san soo
- } classes and my san soo friend has taken several aikido classes
- } before joining san soo.
- }
- } i would appreciate it if somebody could help me out! this problem is
- } not going to escalate but it isn't helping their friendship out and
- } it is impossible to talk with them (i've tried many times).
- }
- } thanks again.

- Your aikido friend is getting what he is looking for.
- Your San Soo Kung Fu friend is getting what he is looking for.
- (BTW I met a girl who was in San Soo a while back--we discussed
- philosophy all night)
-
- Much depends on what the student wants to learn; much depends on how well
- an instructor can cater to the students' needs.
-
- Japanese folk quote: For a cracked pot, there will be a chipped lid
- Western cliche': Birds of a feather flock together
-
- These persons will find each other, moving on to other teachers until
- they find what they need--or being trained in the teacher's ways if they
- don't really know what they're looking for (does Bono Vox really
- know....?)
-
- My instructor would say that they are both at early (immature?) stages
- of their development so that they are extremely loyal to the point of
- discounting the good points and highlighting the bad points of other
- styles. I tend to agree.
-
- I suspect there is no way for you to reconcile them..they will
- simply have to grow tired of their own bickering or avoid each other (to
- your chagrin, I suspect).
-
- ------------------------------
- How long have the martial arts been around?
- Centuries? Decades in some cases, though Hybrids pop up with new names
- (though they are not PURE arts, so can't be considered in this argument)
-
- If there really was a single "best way" for all fighting, it would have
- overborne the others long ago--there would be one single Hand-to-Hand
- fighting system. So many have lasted because they each apply to certain
- circumstances; certain needs while failing to cover other problems. Even
- the hybrids are simply combinations of "the best" of different styles to
- (hopefully) cover the most varieties of posible situations.
-
- *sigh*
- I'm rambling, I'll stop now.
