- To me, a double is a responsive double only if RHO has raised LHO's
- suit. This is the "usual" way to play it, I believe, and I would play
- it that way if we hadn't discussed it beforehand. These are
- responsive, for the unbid suits:
- LHO Partner RHO You LHO Partner RHO You
- 1C double 2C double 1C 1S 2C double
-
- Some people also use responsive doubles after RHO bids 1NT. I don't
- know whether anyone uses responsive doubles after (1C) 1D (1S).
-
- So in this case, double would be penalty, showing good spades, unless
- you're playing Rosenkranz (double shows diamond support and one of the
- top three honors).
-
- With the actual hand, I'd pass. With a different hand and good
- hearts, I might bid 2H on my own, but in this case your club honor is
- badly placed and you have a stiff in partner's suit. I might get a
- chance to bid hearts later, and if I don't, it's probably not our hand
- anyway.
