- Wow!
-
- I've not played at Reno Hilton, only the Flamingo Hilton. They have 2
- deck games, but other than that it is Vegas rules. I didn't know they
- had SD at Reno Hilton.
-
- It sounds like the dealer suspected you of counting, but not the pit
- boss. According to your note, you didn't actually get barred, just
- accused by the dealer. So my first question is, were you tipping the
- dealer regularly? Sounds like you won a lot, were you placing dealer
- bets (ie, paying hush money? :-) Did you attempt to build a rapport
- with him, since you were there, draining him, for 2.5 hours (hence
- making him look bad to his boss)?
-
- Second question, were you playing too "smart"? Avoiding strong plays
- like splitting tens and taking insurance (when it is advantageous)
- might actually make you look smarter to the dealer, because a dealer
- frequently might assume that only a non-counter would split tens or
- buy insurance. Were you pulling back bets when the dealer shuffled?
-
- When playing at the Flamingo, I play at slow times if possible, with
- small ranges in bets, and attempt to strike up a conversation with the
- dealer. I act very dumb. A good act for me is to frequently appear to
- not be able to count up the value of my hand (which isn't much of an
- act for me, especially when I'm trying to compute the true count! :-)
- I ask the dealer the value if I get a handful of low cards, particularly
- if I have one or more aces. At other times I ponder the hand just a
- tiny bit longer than would be necessary for the average player, appearing
- to have difficulty figuring my hand.
-
- I play a solid basic strategy game, including splits and DD, but I
- don't range my bets too agressively (1-4 units typically, and not all at
- once).
-
- I tip the dealers regularly, by placing bets on their behalf. Surprisingly,
- the dealers seem more friendly to you if you *lose* a few of those
- bets, particularly if you played good strategy but just got lousy cards.
-
- Last time I played the pit critter spent an unusual amount of time
- around our table, so I ordered drinks (but sipped them slowly), acted
- dumb, and tipped a lot. He didn't seem to mind that I doubled my stake
- right under his nose.
-
- Oh, and finally, I'd recommend only converting a small amount of your
- table stake to chips at one time. Keeping just a few chips out, and
- having to periodically convert money to chips is 1) a good way to
- appear to be losing, and 2) potentially a good opportunity to squirrel
- away winning chips. Having a large stack in front of you is not
- a good idea, IMHO.
-
- I'm sure other net.gamblers have better advice!
