- It sounds like she is very afraid of the bit, she may have
- a very sensitive mouth. A rubber bit may help. What kind of bit
- are you using now?
- Try putting her halter on over the bridle and slowly slipping
- the bridle off her. Also have her teeth checked by a vet or equine
- dentist, in many young horses the process of shedding the deciduous (baby)
- teeth is not completed properly, these horses then have signifigant sensitivity
- to bits clanking around in the mouth.
- As for spooking, my Arabs are pretty good, quiet thoughtful (except
- when they are in heat, but that is more pent-up energy than anything else,
- and makes for a fun ride), not very spooky. Any horse can be turned into
- a spooker by simply punishing the horse when they spook. What I do when
- my horses spook is to say, "Ho!" and pull on lead or bit (only as hard as
- necessary). When they stop even for a moment I praise them like crazy and
- pet them and tell them how wonderful they are. This sets up a habit/
- reaction in them that if I tell them to stop, no matter how frightened
- they are, then everything will be ok and they will be rewarded and praised.
- There are some horses for whom even the above proceedure does
- not seem to be reassuring enough, these horses are just naturally hyper
- and tend not to think very well, more reactive than thoughtful. It can
- run in some breeding lines, though not always. And even these horses
- can be made better by not punishing them when they spook, however they
- will always be more reactive than other horses. Age is a great calmer
- of even these horses, though again some never seem to grow up.
